Taft High Principal Ron Berz said Wednesday night that he plans to announce today whether he will retain football Coach Troy Starr, who violated a CIF rule regarding undue influence by making improper contact with a junior high school running back.

Berz said the pair met for a “long, very intense conference” on Wednesday.

Berz said he was considering his options regarding the controversial 32-year-old coach, who has compiled a two-year record of 19-7, yet has sometimes rubbed coaches and Taft administrators the wrong way by running up the score.

Golf

A handful of area golfers earned berths in the Southern California Golf Assn. Championships, to be held July 22-24 at Hacienda Golf Course in La Habra Heights.

Qualifying at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena were Steve Holmes of Newbury Park, who shot a two-under-par 70, Rob Campbell of Simi Valley (72), Sang Hyun and Keith Kinsel of Glendale (73), Steve Cutts of Westlake Village (73), Mike Tingus of Calabasas (74) and Jeff Leonard of Encino (74).

Tingus and Leonard were among a group of three players who won berths on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff. Qualifying at the Industry Hills Eisenhower Course was Cameron Gray of Camarillo, who shot a 76.

Volleyball

Peter Piexoto, Jon Baer and Craig Hewitt of Cal State Northridge have been chosen to participate in the U.S. Olympic Festival in St. Louis from July 1-10.

Piexoto finished second last second among the Matadors in service aces (23) and digs (227). Baer recorded 170 kills last season. Hewitt had 864 kills.

Softball

Tryouts for the Moodswings, a girls’ 10-and-under traveling team, are Sunday at 11 a.m. at Balboa Park, Diamond 2.

Basketball

The Conejo Recreation and Park District will conduct summer programs for youth basketball, swimming, gymnastics, tennis and golf.

Two basketball camps for boys 8 to 13 will be held from July 11-15 and July 18-22 at Newbury Park High. An adult golf program is scheduled for July 14 through Aug. 18 for individuals 16 and older. Information: (805) 495-4674.
