Before the Marmonte League faced the Channel League in the Ventura County All-Star baseball game Sunday at Moorpark College, the two teams engaged in a home run-hitting contest.

The results were indicative of the game that followed. No player was able to clear the fence in the contest--and, in the game, neither team got an extra-base hit. But the Marmonte League scored four runs in the sixth inning and held on for a 5-2 victory.

Chuck Hirsh of Westlake had three hits, including a two-run single in the sixth that erased a 1-0 deficit. Kevin Sass of Agoura, who did not start, had two singles and was the only other player with more than one hit.

“Both teams went with their best pitchers early and that kept the hitting down for a while,” Sass said. “Maybe I got a little lucky by coming in in the middle of the game.”

The Channel League scored the first run in the fifth without a base hit. Sean Coker reached on a walk, advanced to second on a ground ball out, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error by Channel Islands shortstop Johnny Olivares.

Rene Sanchez of Channel Islands, the third pitcher for the Marmonte League, gave up one run and no hits in two innings to earn the win.

Simi Valley’s Kary Kozlowski pitched two innings and earned the save.

Earlier, Moorpark’s Jason Adamson had three hits as the Frontier League All-Stars routed seniors from the Tri-Valley League, 14-0.
