1994 LOS ANGELES TIMES : All-Valley Softball Team

Coach: Neils Ludlow

School: EL CAMINO REAL

Ludlow led El Camino Real to its seventh City Section title in his 10-year tenure. The Conquistadores wrested the title from two-time defending champion San Pedro with a 4-0 victory in May.

Student: Michelle Brown

School: HIGHLAND

Position: IF

Brown, who will play for Utah, is Highland’s first softball player to earn a scholarship. Brown batted .420 with 29 RBIs, seven doubles, two triples and two home runs. She was recruited by several colleges.

Student: Crystl Bustos

School: CANYON

Position: IF

Bustos, Foothill League player of the year, might be the best female athlete in the area. The junior shortstop stole 31 bases and batted .573 with 27 RBIs. She had 10 home runs, four triples and 11 doubles.

Student: Sophie Contreraz

School: ALEMANY

Position: P

This junior right-hander was 22-3 with 13 shutouts and two no-hitters. Contreraz was undefeated in 12 Mission League games and was the league’s player of the year. She finished with an ERA of 0.45.

Student: Christine Gill

School: SAUGUS

Position: IF

Gill, a sophomore third baseman, batted .426 and led team with 30 RBIs. Gill, the Centurions’ clean-up hitter, had 43 hits, including three doubles, three triples and two home runs. She scored 17 runs.

Student: Jamie Gillies

School: SAUGUS

Position: P

There was no sophomore jinx for this right-hander. Saugus advanced to the Division II semifinals on the arm of Gillies, the division player of the year. She was 23-3 with a 0.49 ERA, striking out 142 in 184 2/3 innings.

Student: Jennifer Gould

School: EL CAMINO REAL

Position: P

Gould, a senior right-hander who will attend Princeton, was 20-4 with a 0.21 ERA and was named City 4-A player of the year. She struck out 175 batters in 164 innings and allowed five earned runs.

Student: Jamie Johnston

School: PARACLETE

Position: P

Johnston threw six one-hitters and 12 shutouts. The right-hander who will play for Central Michigan next season transferred from Bethel Christian two years ago. She was 18-6 with a 0.60 ERA and 161 strikeouts.

Student: Stephanie Kanzler

School: CRESCENTA VALLEY

Position: OF

Kanzler, a three-year starter, will play for Loyola Marymount. She led Crescenta Valley with a .406 average, 19 runs and 17 stolen bases. Kanzler, a speedy slap-hitter, could reach base several ways.

Student: Esmeralda Macias

School: ALEMANY

Position: OF

Macias, a junior, had 62 hits, four shy of the Southern Section record. She led the team with a .602 batting average and was named Mission League player of the year. She stole 20 bases and scored 30 runs.

Student: Jamie Moore

School: ALEMANY

Position: C

Although Moore drove in 31 runs, she was more impressive with her athleticism behind the plate. Moore’s quick release helped her nail all but one runner attempting to steal. She batted .415 and hit a three home runs.

Student: Ramona Shelburne

School: EL CAMINO REAL

Position: UT

El Camino Real can build a team around Shelburne. The freshman started at four positions. She led the team with a .449 average, 35 hits, 22 RBIs, three doubles, three triples and three home runs.

Student: Cindy Sims

School: QUARTZ HILL

Position: IF

Sims batted .489 and led the Rebels with five doubles, five triples, five home runs, 31 RBIs and 35 runs. Sims, a shortstop who helped Quartz Hill win four consecutive league titles, struck out twice in 90 at-bats.

Student: Alanna Torres

School: MONROE

Position: OF

Torres led the Vikings won the City Section 3-A title. The leadoff batter had a .525 on-base percentage and batted .485 with 27 runs and 11 RBIs. Torres stole 39 bases without being caught.

1st-Team All-Stars Invited to Times’ Awards Ceremony

Players selected to the All-Valley and All-Ventura County baseball and softball teams are invited to a Times’ awards brunch Sunday at 9 a.m. at the Warner Center Marriott in Woodland Hills. The guest speaker is Rich Hill, baseball coach at University of San Francisco who formerly coached at Cal Lutheran.
