If the Watts Summer Games serve as a testing ground for what lies ahead during the regular season, Coach John Goffredo can’t wait for the 1994-95 basketball campaign.

In numerous years of competing in the Games, this is only the third time Goffredo’s Crescenta Valley High team has reached the second weekend of competition.

“I really like it because it helps us find out where we’re strong and weak and we get to do it against the best teams around,” Goffredo said.

Behind the solid play of Brock Jacobsen, 6-foot-5 All-Southern Section forward, and 6-8 center Blake Jacobson, the Falcons have reached this weekend’s round of 16. They meet Morningside at 11 a.m. Saturday at Washington High. The final is Sunday at 2:30 p.m at Compton College.

Crescenta Valley started the 128-team tournament with a 64-48 victory over Canyon, then defeated Pius X, 57-31. Jacobsen had 29 points against Pius X and Jacobson added 15.

“Both of them are Division I players,” Goffredo said. “They give us a one-two punch that is pretty tough to stop.”

The Falcons earned a spot in the quarterfinals by defeating Washington, 57-53, in Sunday’s third round. Jacobson had 15 points and Jacobsen had 14. Both players are being recruited by Division I colleges, according to Goffredo.

Pepperdine, Texas A&M;, Brigham Young University and St. Mary’s are among the schools that have contacted Goffredo about his two standout players.

Both must be in top form against Morningside.

“We don’t run like they do, but we’re an excellent shooting team,” Goffredo said. “Brock is an excellent three-point shooter and that always makes a difference.”

Also advancing to the round of 16 is Notre Dame, which will play Manual Arts at 9 a.m. Saturday at Inglewood High, and Kennedy, which meets Norwalk at noon at Washington High.

Notre Dame defeated Pilgrim, 44-31, Inglewood, 43-40, and Alhambra, 48-41. Kennedy beat J.W. North, 53-47, Antelope Valley, 50-22, and Eagle Rock, 58-53.

No area teams survived the first weekend in the 64-team girls’ basketball tournament. Crescenta Valley lasted the longest, losing to Morningside, 50-30, in Sunday’s third round.

In seven-on-seven football, Hart has qualified for Sunday’s semifinal at Compton College. The Indians, making their third consecutive semifinal appearance, beat L.A. High, Carson and Bell.

Hart meets Trabuco Hills at 10:30 a.m. Millikan and Long Beach Poly play in the other semifinal. The championship game is at 1:30.

Hart quarterback Steve McKeon, in his varsity debut, had solid performances in every game. He did so well, in fact, that Hart assistant Dean Herrington said the recent transfer Scott Boldvich from Burroughs will not affect McKeon’s starting role in the fall.

Boldvich, a 6-3 senior, passed for 843 yards last season.

“Steve is our starting quarterback and he will be in every game as long as he is healthy,” Herrington said. “For a junior and his first time out, he looked real good.”

In water polo, Crespi defeated Fontana, 16-15, and will meet Servite in the final at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday.
