Elvis fans and those nostalgic for the 1950s can indulge themselves and help make a wish come true for a dying child by Hula-Hooping it up at a Make-a-Wish Foundation fund-raiser on July 9.

Fred Johnson, the executive director of Orange County’s chapter of Make-a-Wish, will use his collection of thousands of albums from the ‘50s when he serves as disc jockey for the party from 6:30 to 11:00 p.m. at Crean Village, 2300 Mesa Drive, in Santa Ana Heights. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased in advance or at the door.

The party will feature “Nick ‘55,” an Elvis impersonator.

Make-a-Wish’s Orange County chapter, based in Irvine, has made the dreams of more than 700 children come true since 1983, according to Marlene Eckert, a vice president and board member.

“We have never turned away any child that is referred to us and who is medically qualified,” she said. The foundation funds the wishes of children who have terminal illnesses or life-threatening diseases and who will probably not reach their 18th birthdays, she said.

Wishes range from puppies to computers to trips to Ireland and, most commonly, to Disney World in Orlando, Eckert said.
