“The real winners in the World Cup look like being Guinness (stout). An aggressive advertising campaign, tied into sponsorship of the Ireland team, has apparently increased public awareness of the black stuff.

“Publicans in areas where there is a large Irish population like north London, Manchester and Merseyside, have been reportedly selling a week’s Guinness on one match night. Even English devotees of lager (light beer) have been switching drinks.

“(Irish Coach) Jack Charlton has participated in promoting the beer and has a keg in his hotel room for private consumption.”
