BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Giants Lose Thompson for the Season
San Francisco Giant all-star second baseman Robby Thompson will be out for the year after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder. Thompson, 32, underwent a 1 1/2-hour operation to repair a tendon in the rotator cuff and remove damaged tissue and cartilage from the shoulder. He was batting .209 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 35 games. In 1993, Thompson batted .312, hit 19 home runs and had 65 RBIs. . . . Florida Marlin closer Bryan Harvey, who has pitched only 10 1/3 innings this year because of injuries, will undergo groin surgery next week and may miss the rest of the season. Rehabilitation is expected to take at least six weeks. . . . Toronto Blue Jay reliever Duane Ward underwent an arthroscopic procedure in Birmingham, Ala., and is finished for the season. Ward, who has been on the disabled list all season, was found to have a partial tear of the rotator cuff as well as some deterioration in the upper lip of the cuff. James Andrews directed the surgery on the 30-year-old pitcher, who led the American League with 45 saves last season.
