Fullerton’s Lee Shoots 67, Leads by Four at USGA Girls’ Junior

Jenny Lee of Fullerton shot six-under-par 67 Monday and held a four-shot lead over Kelli Kuehne of McKinney, Texas, after the opening round of the USGA Girls’ Junior championships Monday in Great Falls, Mont.

Lee, who will be a senior at Sunny Hills High, had eight birdies and two bogeys over the 6,138-yard Meadow Lark Country Club course.

One shot behind Kuehne, a semifinalist in this event last year in Costa Mesa, were Rae Anna Staples of Miami, and Julie Oh of Torrance.

Staples, 14, is playing in her fourth Girls’ Junior championship, while Oh is the sister of Ted Oh, who played in last year’s U.S. Open at age 16.

Jenny Glasgow of Corona del Mar shot 79 and Jane Park of Buena Park had 83.

The second round is Tuesday after which the field will be cut to the top 64 for match play. The final is Saturday.

Lake Forest won the girls’ Division 4 championship of the American Youth Soccer Organization World Games Sunday in Mission Viejo with a 2-1 victory over Van Nuys. There were 24 teams in the 12-and-under division.

Lake Forest got goals from Erin Magette and Sam Bartlett, whose game-winning score came 35 minutes into the match.

The local team advanced earlier in the day with a 4-1 semifinal victory over Miliani, Hawaii, as Magette scored twice and Melissa Laughlin and Nicole Imech scored once.

Lake Forest was 6-0-1 in the six-day tournament.

Ocean View’s Katie Lindquist, Huntington Beach’s Melissa Wendt and Esperanza’s Allison Anderson were named All-Americans at the recently concluded U.S. Junior Olympic Volleyball National Championships in Austin, Tex.

The three helped the Reebok Magnum Blue club team of Anaheim to the silver medal. ASICS Munciana, from Muncie, Ind., beat the Anaheim team, 8-15, 15-3, 15-8, for the 16-and-under elite title. The final game was played using rally scoring.

Lindquist and Wendt were named to the first team; Anderson made the second team.

Calvary Chapel’s Philip Schildts, the Southern Section Division III player of the year, was accepted to Long Beach State and will try out for the men’s volleyball team, Calvary Chapel Coach Chuck Wright said.

Schildts, a second-team Times all-county selection, led Calvary Chapel to a three-game sweep of Santa Ynez in the Division III championship match.
