Voorhees Wins Twice, Lands in Quarterfinals

Heidi Voorhees of Valley Village won a pair of matches Thursday to advance to the quarterfinal round of the Women’s Trans-National golf championship at Del Rio Country Club in Modesto.

Voorhees, who last spring graduated from USC, defeated Tracy Thompson of Phoenix in the morning round, 3 and 2. In the afternoon, Voorhees defeated Viny Rivello of Mexico City, 4 and 2.

Voorhees, 21, faces Melinda Daniels of Stanford today in a morning quarterfinal. The semifinals follow in the afternoon.

Andrea Gaston of Chatsworth was defeated in the afternoon by Leslie Shannon of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., 2 and 1. In the morning, Shannon defeated Linda Chen Olsen of Granada Hills, 4 and 2.

Gaston and Olsen are both members of Porter Valley Country Club. Gaston edged Pat Cornett-Iker of Corte Madera, Calif., 1 up, in the morning round.

Darren Angel of Northridge fired an even-par 70 to move into a tie for sixth place with one round remaining in the American Junior Golf Assn.’s Rolex Tournament of Champions at Oak Tree Country Club in Edmond, Okla.

Angel is tied with D.A. Points of Pekin, Ill., at 214. They trail leader Robert Floyd of Miami Beach, Fla., by nine shots. Floyd shot a third-round 68, his third consecutive sub-par round.

Baseball

Mike Bolyog has resigned as Oak Park High’s baseball coach after three seasons, citing personal reasons. Bolyog, 44, said he plans to devote more time to a free-lance writing career. He will remain a teacher at Oak Park, where he been a Spanish instructor for four years.

Bolyog compiled a 37-28-1 record at Oak Park. In 1992, Oak Park reached the Southern Section 1-A Division final, losing to Valley Christian, 11-5. Bolyog was head baseball coach at Villanova Prep from 1981-89, winning two league titles. No successor was named.

Football

The Minnesota Vikings signed former Agoura High standout Todd Steussie to a four-year, $3.25 million contract. Steussie, a 6-foot-6, 305-pound tackle, was a four-year starter at Cal who was named second-team All-American by the Associated Press.

The Vikings selected Steussie with the 19th pick in the first round last June.

Softball

Laree Reynolds, center fielder for Cal Lutheran, has been named third-team All-American by the National Softball Coaches Assn.

Cross-Country

Hector Nieves, women’s cross-country coach at Cal Lutheran over the past eight years, has been named men’s coach. Nieves led Cal Lutheran to sixth place in the SCIAC championships in April.

Tennis

Twins Mike and Bob Bryan of Camarillo recorded singles victories to lead Southern California into today’s final round of the U.S. Tennis Assn.’s 16-and-under intersectional championships at Peirrmonte Oaks Tennis Club in Shreveport, La. Southern California defeated Northern California, 6-3.

Mike Bryan defeated Rex Calauman, 6-1, 6-1. Bob Bryan defeated Robert Kendrick, 6-1, 6-0.

Second-seeded Gene Malin of Woodland Hills and unseeded Art Santilli of Camarillo advanced to today’s quarterfinal round of the U.S. Tennis Assn. National 45 Men’s Hard Court Championships at Westlake Tennis & Swim Club.

Malin outlasted Luis Glass of San Diego, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4, while Santilli upset No. 8 seeded Guy Fritz of Los Angeles, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.
