A brush fire broke out in the hills of southwest Simi Valley on Sunday night, causing Ventura County Fire Department officials to declare a second alarm and to dispatch at least one water-dropping helicopter to the scene.

The fire broke out around 8:45 p.m. near Trickling Brook Court and as of 10 p.m. had burned at least 2 acres, according to a fire department spokeswoman.

Philip Daley, a resident on Trickling Brook, said the fire at 9:30 p.m. was within a half-mile of structures.

“So far we’re just sitting tight,” Daley said. “The fire department hasn’t told us to leave yet. At this point I estimate it’s about half-mile away.”

Daley estimated that as many as 10 acres may be consumed by the fire.

As of 10 p.m. fire department officials began releasing engine companies from the scene, but no further information was immediately available.
