Dukes Claim World TeamTennis Awards

The Dukes, the only World TeamTennis team to go undefeated during the regular season, took four of the league’s top individual awards, it was announced Wednesday.

Kelly Jones was selected the male MVP and Larisa Neiland was chosen female MVP and rookie of the year. Coach Angel Lopez was selected coach of the year for guiding the Dukes (14-0) to the Western Division championship.

The Dukes play the Idaho Sneakers--who defeated the Sacramento Capitals, 28-23, Wednesday--in the playoffs at 7 p.m. Friday in Sacramento.

A baseball tournament for inner-city youth teams from 10 U.S. cities, Puerto Rico and the Czech Republic begins Saturday in Orange County and will culminate with two championship games Aug. 11 at Anaheim Stadium.

The tournament, known as the RBI World Series, is part of a program called Reviving Baseball in the Inner Cities (RBI). The series is sponsored by Major League Baseball with assistance from the Sporting Goods Manufacturing Assn. and the Angels.

The program operated in 30 cities this summer.

Teams competing in the junior division (ages 13-15) are from Atlanta, Los Angeles, Miami, Newark (N.J.), St. Louis and Washington as well as San Juan, Puerto Rico and the Czech Republic.

Teams in the senior division (ages 16-18) are from Atlanta, Boston, Bridgeport (Conn.), Los Angeles, Louisville, Miami, Richmond (Va.), and San Juan.

Preliminary games will be played at Cal State Fullerton, Fullerton College, El Dorado High and Hart Park in Orange. The junior division championship game is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Aug. 11 at Anaheim Stadium, with the senior division championship to follow at about 11:30.

Jeff McGraw of Fullerton shot a three-over-par 73 in the second round of the American Junior Golf Assn.’s Boys Junior Championship at the Four Seasons Resort and Club Tournament Players Course in Irving, Tex.

McGraw’s two-round total of 145 puts him 13 strokes behind the overall leader, Robert Floyd of Miami Beach, the son of Senior tour star Raymond Floyd. McGraw is 10 shots behind Edward Loar of Rockwall, Texas, who leads the 15-16 division with a 135 total. Yorba Linda’s Chris Berry shot a 78 for 153.
