Rest of Saugus Field Unable to Put Dent in Woodside’s Sportsman Lead

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Sean Woodside did not have the look of a champion on Saturday.

Thanks to an accident in a trophy dash earlier in the night, the right side of Woodside’s car was severely damaged--at least cosmetically.

But looks can be deceiving as Woodside inched closer to the Sportsman points championship with a victory and a second-place finish in the twin 25-lap main events at Saugus Speedway.

The Saugus resident, who entered the night with a 34-point lead over Ron Daniels of San Bernardino, finished with just that--a 34-point advantage--with only three races left this season.

In the opening 25-lap event, Woodside and Sean Monroe of Los Angeles exchanged the lead--and contact--before Monroe was forced to the pits with a flat tire on the eighth lap.

Woodside then out-dueled Daniels, who finished second, to register his fifth main-event victory of the season. Craig Rayburn of Simi Valley was third, followed by Carson’s Gary Sigman.

Sigman led the final 25-lap race the opening 14 laps before mechanical troubles forced him out of the race.

Daniels inherited the lead and held off Woodside to win his second main event of the season.

In the Grand American Modified class, three-time defending champion and current points leader Dave Phipps of Simi Valley posted his fourth feature win of the year.

In the 20-lap Mini Stock Racing Assn. main event, Glendora High senior Richie Lloyd won his second feature race of the season.
