NOTEBOOK : Argentine Basketball Coaches Enlist Help : Ex-Crenshaw YMCA official will hold clinics in Buenos Aires and Concordia next month.

Quinton Worthams, formerly of the Crenshaw YMCA, will travel to Argentina to perform basketball clinics for youth coaches from Buenos Aires and Concordia, Sept. 2-12.

Worthams was a youth coach for nine years at the Crenshaw YMCA and an active board member for three.

Worthams caught the attention of Argentine organizers after he conducted a clinic for youth coaches from Mexico in May, 1993.

The Mexican youth organization later competed in an international tournament sponsored by the Argentine Basketball Youth Club in December. Its four teams took first place in their respective age groups (6-8, 9-11, 13-15 and 16 and up).

Jose Catanaro, president of the Argentine Basketball Youth Club, contacted Ricardo Marentez, Worthams’ translator.

Catanaro was interested in Worthams performing a youth clinic in Concordia for the Argentine Basketball Youth Club coaches.

“I am looking forward to the experience because it gives me a chance to expand on what I have been doing in youth basketball and at the Amateur Athletic Foundation,” Worthams said.

The trip is sponsored by the Argentine Basketball Youth Club.

Athletico California of Ontario defeated Jamaya of East Los Angeles, 2-1, in the finals of the second annual Los Angeles Copa de Coca-Cola soccer tournament Aug. 20 at Cal State Los Angeles.

Athletico California collected $5,000 first prize and Jamaya received $1,500.

Goalie Celso Castro of Athletico California, who averaged seven saves a game, was selected the tournament’s most valuable player. Teammate Efrain Pena was the tournament’s leading scorer with eight goals.

Cal State Los Angeles coach Leonardo Cuellar gave a soccer clinic before the tournament.

Los Angeles Copa de Coca-Cola is a national Latino amateur soccer tournament held annually throughout the United States.

Former Loyola High basketball player Lee Roberts signed with Wagner College of Staten Island, N.Y., last week.

Roberts, a 6-foot, 175-pound point guard, attended Northfield Mt. Hermon preparatory school in Maine, where he averaged 10.1 points, 9.2 assists and 4.1 steals during the 1992-93 season. Roberts was sidelined with a knee injury his senior season.

Roberts played as a sophomore for Loyola.
