Shackleford Forced Out

Ray Shackleford, the only football coach in the history of Golden West College, said Wednesday he is being forced to step down after this season.

The college made the announcement in a statement Wednesday night but gave no reason. Shackleford, 56, said he will continue to teach at the college.

“This is not my decision,” Shackleford said. “It’s also very inappropriate to announce it at this time. It should have come at the end of the season. That’s all I really have to say.”

Golden West opens the season Saturday night at Long Beach.

“It’s a personnel matter,” Golden West Athletic Director Tom Hermstad said. “I’m sorry he put it that way.”

Shackleford, starting his 29th season at Golden West, is the second winningest active community college coach in the nation with a mark of 155-113-9.
