Trabuco Hills played the numbers game against Laguna Hills and won, 24-7, Friday night at Mission Viejo High.

Showing exceptional depth at the skilled positions, the fifth-ranked Mustangs rotated five running backs and completed passes to seven receivers.

Meanwhile, Laguna Hills stayed with its one-dimensional offense, which sputtered in the first half and finally crashed in the second.

Brendan McGraw, who rushed for 277 yards and six touchdowns last week, produced 119 yards in 14 carries for the Hawks, but half of that came on his 66-yard touchdown run in the second quarter that tied the score, 7-7.

Trabuco Hills (2-0) then came back on its next drive and marched to the 25-yard line, where Mike Junge kicked a 42-yard field goal with 5:07 left in the second quarter.

The second half belonged to the Mustang defense, which held McGraw to 42 yards rushing and produced two interceptions by Jake Anderson.

The Trabuco Hills offense came up with its longest drive of the game late in the third quarter as quarterbacks J.C. Pintsak and Chad Collins combined on four consecutive completions to give the Mustangs first and goal at the 9.

Three plays later, Bobby Johnson capped the eight-play, 83-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run and a 17-7 lead.

Anderson’s second interception was returned 45 yards to the Laguna Hills 49-yard line and set up the Mustangs’ final score.

Larry Harper picked up 13 yards on a reception over the middle and Anderson then put the ball at the one with another pass from Pintsak.

De Sha Runnels then scored from a yard to give Trabuco Hills a 24-7 lead with 2:53 left in the game.

Pintsak led the Mustang offense, competing 10 of 16 passes for 124 yards.

McGraw led the Laguna Hills receivers with 60 yards on four catches, including 38 on the game’s opening play.
