Cerritos Valley Christian 21, Kilpatrick 7--Reserve running back James Evans rushed for 114 yards in 14 carries for Kilpatrick, but it wasn’t enough to beat the Crusaders (2-0) at Valley Christian.

Trailing, 21-7, in the fourth quarter, Kilpatrick twice drove inside the Crusaders’ 20, but could not score.

The Mustangs (1-1) outgained the Crusaders, 223-152, without the help of tailback Mario Qualls, who was sidelined for disciplinary reasons.

Kilpatrick trailed, 14-0, at halftime, but cut the deficit to 14-7 on a Wardell Joe’s seven-yard touchdown pass to Shawn Reed in the third quarter.

Santa Ana Calvary Chapel 14, L.A. Baptist 12--Calvary Chapel’s Alex Okland intercepted a pass at the Calvary Chapel 15-yard line with 1 minute 30 seconds to play, thwarting a second-half comeback by L.A. Baptist at Alemany High.

Calvary Chapel (2-0) scored on a one-yard run by quarterback Waylan Kruse on the opening drive of the game and a two-yard run Neil Sharkey late in the second quarter to take a 14-0 lead.

L.A. Baptist (0-2), held to seven total yards in the first half, exploded for 202 yards in the second half, including a one-yard touchdown run by Joe Romero in the third quarter that cut Calvary Chapel’s lead to, 14-7.

Chris Ross led L.A. Baptist with 98 yards in 17 carries. Quarterback Robin Woo completed five of 13 passes for 86 yards and Romero rushed for 31 yards in eight carries.

Mark Achan led Calvary Chapel with 93 yards in 19 carries. He rushed for 60 yards on the opening drive.
