PREP ROUNDUP : No. 3 Mater Dei Loses in Girls’ Tennis

Tiffany Blackburn and Jessica Peirog swept their sets at No. 2 doubles as Santa Margarita, the seventh-ranked team in Orange County, beat third-ranked Mater Dei, 13-5, in a nonleague girls’ tennis match Tuesday at the Costa Mesa Tennis Club.

Blackburn and Peirog won, 6-0, 6-3, 7-6, for Santa Margarita (5-1). Laura Ruben won, 6-1, 6-1, 7-5, for Mater Dei (5-1).

In other nonleague matches:

Woodbridge 11, El Modena 7--Sixth-ranked Woodbridge (4-1) swept all three doubles matches and No. 1 singles player Natalie Exon won two of three, losing only to Brandi Freudenberg, 6-1.

Los Alamitos 17, Long Beach Wilson 1--Michelle Schneider teamed with Pauline Fode on a 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, sweep for ninth-ranked Los Alamitos (3-1).

Orange 11, Trabuco Hills 7--Jenny Von Behren swept at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, for host Orange (5-0).

Irvine 9, Capistrano Valley 9 (Irvine wins in games, 81-76)--Sarah Denson swept her sets, 6-4, 6-0, 6-0, to help lead visiting Irvine (3-1).

In boys’ nonleague cross-country:

San Clemente 15, Carlsbad 50--Curtis Douglas, Fernando Ayala and Matt Fischer all ran three miles in 17:12 for host San Clemente (1-0).

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Los Amigos 3, Magnolia 2--Alina Palomino led Los Amigos (1-1) with 14 kills as the visiting Lobos won, 15-5, 10-15, 15-9, 12-15, 17-15. Teammate Kelli Hoover added 11 kills and Maelleii Tagatuli had 28 assists.

Fountain Valley 3, Cerritos Gahr 0--The Barons won their season-opener, defeating visiting Gahr in a nonleague match, 15-10, 15-7, 15-2.

Edison 3, Woodbridge 0--Erin McCown and Shelby Clemens each had 12 kills as the fourth-ranked Chargers won, 15-4, 15-4, 15-8. Woodbridge is 4-1 and Edison 3-0.

Laguna Beach 3, Capistrano Valley 1--Laguna Beach (6-1), the county’s second-ranked team, downed Capistrano Valley, 15-8, 15-13, 13-15, 15-6. Christy Collisson had 44 assists and Michelle Christ added 18 kills for Laguna Beach.

Santa Margarita 3, University 0--Michelle Starkees had 48 assists as Santa Margarita won, 15-11, 15-4, 15-11.

In nonleague water polo:

Long Beach Wilson 10, Los Alamitos 2--Matt Armato scored five goals for host Long Beach Wilson, the top-ranked team in the Southern Section Division I poll. Los Alamitos is 5-2.

Brea-Olinda 8, Trabuco Hills 4--Eric Matthews scored three goals and Tim Bischel had 11 saves for visiting Brea-Olinda (3-0), the top-ranked team in Division VI. Jimmy Bray scored three times for Trabuco Hills (3-4), ranked ninth in Division I.

Cypress 20, Magnolia 17--Dave Watkins scored 10 goals for Cypress (2-0), which overcame an 11-10 halftime deficit.

Villa Park 14, Irvine 7--Junior Brian Pharris scored six goals and had three assists for seventh-ranked Villa Park (5-1).
