Damien football Coach Dick Larson is on the verge of a milestone, and nothing would be sweeter than to reach it Friday night.

Larson will be going for his 200th victory when the unbeaten Spartans play host to undefeated Bishop Amat, the top-ranked team in the nation, in what figures to be one of the San Gabriel Valley’s biggest games of the season.

The South Pasadena water polo team, the defending Division II champion, is the top-ranked team in Division III.

The Tigers were moved as part of the Southern Section’s expansion from four to six divisions.

South Pasadena Coach Jerry Wulf, in his 11th season, has guided the Tigers to four Southern Section titles and seven consecutive Rio Hondo League championships.

The Keppel girls’ tennis team, consistently one of the San Gabriel Valley’s best, ended a six-year losing streak against perennial power San Marino by defeating the Titans, 13-5.

Singles players Yen Khuu, Jackie Lau and Robyn Kuroki each won three matches.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Pasadena City College football team tied Golden West, 35-35, in a Mission Conference game Saturday, but the Lancers missed a chance to win the game when Chris Emerson’s 32-yard field goal attempt with 13 seconds left sailed wide.

On Sept. 10, Emerson kicked a 27-yard field goal with two seconds left to give the Lancers a season-opening victory over Orange Coast.

Against Golden West, Joe Phears completed 26 of 40 passes for 313 yards and four touchdowns. Saladin McCullough gained 107 yards in 17 carries.

Mt. San Antonio College, which had a bye last week, will attempt to get on the winning track when the Mounties play Southwestern on Saturday.

Mt. SAC tied Fullerton, 39-39, in its season opener.

Citrus begins Foothill Conference play Saturday against Victor Valley.

The Owls (0-2) are coming off a 21-14 loss to Los Angeles Southwest.

Citrus quarterback Gabe Agredano did not start because of a hamstring injury. Dhati Lewis completed two of 12 passes for 21 yards before Agredano came on to complete 10 of 20 passes for 134 yards and a touchdown.

COLLEGES

La Verne’s football team has a bye this week after improving to 2-0 with a 47-7 victory over Azusa Pacific.

La Verne running back Darren MacClellan gained 138 yards in 23 carries and scored two touchdowns for the Leopards, who handed Azusa Pacific its worst home defeat. Bill Zernickow, a transfer from Azusa Pacific, scored twice for La Verne.

La Verne’s Ryan Campuzano completed eight of 11 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown.

Azusa Pacific will be looking for its first victory Saturday when the Cougars play host to Humboldt State.

Claremont, which lost its opener against Cal Lutheran, 37-34, travels to Chapman on Saturday.

Claremont quarterback John Shipp completed 27 of 43 passes for 377 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for 51 yards and scored a touchdown. Mike Cook caught 11 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns.

Pomona-Pitzer (0-2) plays host to Redlands (2-0) Saturday in a Southern California Collegiate Athletic Assn. opener. The Sagehens lost to Colorado College, 28-0, last week.

The Azusa Pacific women’s soccer team, off to its best start in school history, takes a five-game winning streak into today’s Golden State Athletic Conference contest against Westmont. The Cougars, who have not given up a goal in three matches, are ranked 10th in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics, their highest ranking ever.

Sophomore midfielder Lori Holt scored two goals and assisted on two others in a 6-0 victory over Southern California College in the Cougars’ GSAC opener last week. She also had two goals and two assists in an 8-0 GSAC victory over Cal Baptist.

The Claremont women’s volleyball team won the Pomona-Pitzer tournament with victories over Tufts, Pomona-Pitzer, Elmhurst, Occidental and Mills.

The Athenas, two-time defending Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions, play in the UC San Diego tournament next week.

PREP OF THE WEEK

Brett Pierce, South Hills--Pierce was all over the field during the Huskies’ 38-0 victory over Mountain View, scoring on a 72-yard punt return and a 55-yard interception return.

Pierce also completed eight of 12 passes for 91 yards, including a 10-yard touchdown pass to Mark Reza.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Lori Holt, Azusa Pacific--Holt, a sophomore midfielder from Snohomish, Wash., scored two goals and assisted on two others to lead the Cougars’ women’s soccer team to a 6-0 victory over Southern California College in a Golden State Athletic Conference opener.

Holt also had two goals and two assists in an 8-0 GSAC victory over Cal Baptist. Holt has six goals in five games.

MISCELLANY

Magic Johnson is among the celebrities who are scheduled to play in a charity basketball game that will raise funds for athletic scholarships at Cal State L.A. The Tiny “Zeus” Lister Benefit Celebrity basketball game will be played Oct. 1 at Cal State L.A. Lister is a former Division II shotput champion who competed for the school.
