PREP ROUNDUP : Woodbridge Knocks Off Corona del Mar
Woodbridge won a tie-breaker to upset No. 9 Corona del Mar in Sea View League boys’ cross-country.
The Warriors’ Jon Jeffrey had the fastest sixth-place finish (17 minutes 3 seconds), giving Woodbridge the victory at home Thursday after a 28-28 tie.
The Sea Kings’ Brian Slingsby finished first on the three-mile course in 15:29, but the Warriors’ Ross Venook (15:37) and Sherman Steve (15:46) took second and third to lead Woodbridge (1-0) over last year’s league co-champions. Corona del Mar is 0-1.
In the Century League:
Orange 25, Villa Park 31--The 10th-ranked Panthers upset No. 5 Villa Park. Glenn Busch finished first in 15:48 for Orange (2-0) at Irvine Park’s 3.1-mile course. Jeremy Mordock of Villa Park finished second in 15:58 and Joaquin Aceves was third in 15:49.
In the Empire League:
Katella 19, Century 38--Top-ranked Katella (1-0) won its league opener as Edgar Benitez, Erick Miramontes and Juan Venegas finished within three seconds of each other. Miramontes won in 15:44, Miramontes was second in 15:45 and Venegas finished in 15:47.
In the Golden West League:
Tustin 15, Westminster 50; Santa Ana 15, Westminster 50; Santa Ana 24, Tustin 31--Santa Ana’s Luis Zaragoza was first on the Tustin course, finishing in 15:44. Teammate Danny Rivero, 0.10 seconds behind Zaragoza, was second. Fourth-ranked Santa Ana is 2-0, Tustin 1-1 and Westminster 0-2.
In the Golden West League:
Tustin 21, Westminster 35; Tustin 24, Santa Ana 31; Santa Ana 23, Westminster 32--Mandy Reigle finished first for Tustin in 19:13. Tustin is 2-0, Santa Ana 1-1 and Westminster 0-2.
In nonleague girls’ tennis:
Los Alamitos 10, Mater Dei 8--Michelle Schneider and Alison Miller led ninth-ranked Los Alamitos (5-1) with a 7-6, 6-1, 6-1 sweep at No.1 doubles. Laura Rubin swept at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0 for third-ranked Mater Dei (2-2).
In nonleague girls’ volleyball:
Edison 3, Capistrano Valley 1--Fourth-ranked Edison (4-0) rebounded after losing the first game to post a 9-15, 15-8, 15-0, 15-4 victory at Capistrano Valley. Jill Butts had 30 assists, 11 digs and eight kills for the Chargers.
Mater Dei 3, Fountain Valley 2--Roberta Gehlke had 29 kills to lead Mater Dei (3-0) back after losing the first two games, 12-15, 7-15, 15-10, 15-13, 15-9. Kristen Moro had 23 kills for Fountain Valley:
In first round play of the South Coast water polo tournament:
Villa Park 12, Santa Barbara 11 (OT)--Freshman Kyle Baumgarner scored the winning goal for seventh-ranked Villa Park in sudden death. The Spartans rallied from a 10-5 third quarter deficit. Santa Barbara is the top-ranked team in Division IV.
Peter Cornue scored six goals for Villa Park (7-1). The Spartans beat Poway, 14-8, in the second round and will face Corona del Mar today in the quarterfinals.
