The numbers for Westlake High quarterback Scott Spruill against Camarillo Friday night were impressive, but not exceptional.

However, Spruill did all of his work in one half and five of his 17 completions were touchdown passes.

Spruill completed 17 of 25 for 287 yards in the Warriors’ 58-21 victory over the Scorpions at Thousand Oaks High.

By halftime, Westlake had a 39-7 lead. Brian Shubin took over for most of the second half for Spruill, completing all three passes he threw for 52 yards and a touchdown.

“It was like playing catch out there, the corners had their backs turned the whole time,” Spruill said. “Last week, we showed we could run but we didn’t want them to forget we could pass too.”

Westlake finished with 528 yards of offense, including 189 yards rushing, mostly in the second half.

Standout wide receiver Billy Miller was the primary target for Spruill, catching eight passes for 152 yards and three touchdowns, all in the first half.

Like Spruill, Miller didn’t play in the second half except to field an onside kick late in the game.

“I finally feel like I played like an All-American tonight,” Miller said.

Miller scored on pass plays of 10, 46 and a diving 19-yard reception early in the second quarter.

Mike Leibin (five receptions, 66 yards) caught the other two scoring passes from Spruill.

Penalties were the only way to slow Westlake (4-1, 2-0 in league play) even momentarily. The Warriors were penalized 15 times for 140 yards.

Wastlake scored on every possession in the opening half and nine of 10 possessions in the game. The Scorpions finally stopped Shubin on a fourth-down sneak midway through the fourth quarter.

Camarillo tailback Roth Valencia caught a pair of late touchdown passes from Joe Bouchard to slice into a 58-7 lead.

Bouchard completed 11 of 26 passes for 150 yards. Valencia caught six passes for 44 yards.

Valencia, the leading rusher in the area entering the game, was held to 75 yards in 17 attempts, breaking away only once, a 21-yard touchdown run in the second quarter which brought Camarillo (1-4, 0-2) to within 20-7.
