Like others ready to separate fact from fiction, Servite Coach Larry Toner wanted to get a good view of Bellflower St. John Bosco’s Ryan Williams, one of the state’s most sought-after running backs.

“He’s good, quite good,” Toner said before the game. “But at least on film, I haven’t seen him getting hit often.”

On Friday, Toner and the Friars got several looks at Williams--most of them fleeting. The 5-9, 175-pound senior rushed for 185 yards in 22 carries, caught another pass for 17 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead the Braves to a 43-28 victory over Servite before 1,500 at Titan Stadium.

On the ground, Williams had touchdown runs of two, three and 57 yards. His lone reception also resulted in a touchdown. And if that wasn’t enough, he returned a kick 68 yards.

“He has great vision; he sees the whole field, attacks and makes people miss,” St. John Bosco Coach Larry Persons said of Williams. “He’s broken a long run in every game. But he lifts the team with his work ethic as much as his play. You can’t ask for a better kid to play the position and we’ve got a lot of them on this team.”

Williams, who had 110 yards in the first half, has grown accustomed to these kind of nights.

But he said he doesn’t plan the big plays. “I’ve got great blockers and halfbacks out there. I don’t look for long runs, they just happen.”

But other St. John Bosco players weren’t exactly standing around watching.

Quarterback Bob Fierro passed for 81 yards and a touchdown and scored on a 33-yard bootleg in the first quarter. Williams twin brother, Richard, rushed for 19 yards and caught two passes for 40 yards.

Servite was paced by running backs David Bedard (70 yards) and Frank Patti (54 yards). Bedard also returned a kick 88 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. That play temporarily brought Servite, which trailed 21-6 at the half, back to 28-20.

But then Ryan Williams scored his final touchdown on St. John Bosco’s next possession to settle matters.

What does Toner think now?

“He’s still good,” Toner said. “But their line is huge and powerful. They don’t do anything fancy. They outhit us and outplayed us.”

Servite got off to a quick start, going 78 yards in nine plays, ending with Patti’s 10-yard touchdown run. A two-point conversion failed.

But St. John Bosco took command by scoring the next three times it had the ball.

St. John Bosco’s most impressive drive, 91 yards in 10 plays, came in the second quarter. Ryan Williams had a hand in six of the plays, including a three-yard touchdown run to push the Braves’ lead to 13.
