SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Brent Carder is in his 25th year coaching at Antelope Valley College, but if there is a silver lining to be found this season, his football team is having a difficult time finding it.

Antelope Valley dropped a 32-14 Foothill Conference game to Grossmont on Saturday, dropping the Marauders to 1-4, 1-1 in conference play, one of their worst starts under Carder.

“We stunk,” said Carder. “I wish I could be more articulate, but I can’t.”

Grossmont held a 17-0 lead in the third quarter before Antelope Valley rallied with two touchdowns.

Antelope Valley drove 84 yards in 10 plays and scored on Domino Gibson’s three-yard run. That drive was the longest for Antelope Valley this season.

Early in the fourth quarter, Christopher Brown scored on a 53-yard pass play from Michael Gleich. With Zoltan Matrai’s conversion kick, the Marauders trailed by three, 17-14.

Antelope Valley’s defense then fell apart, however, and the Griffins (3-1, 1-1) scored 15 consecutive points to put the game out of reach.

“We were flat coming into the game,” Antelope Valley defensive back Jarod Dodson said. “They have a high-powered offense, but that’s no excuse.

“They wanted it more than us.”

Antelope Valley had its usual allotment of turnovers, with two interceptions and two fumbles.

However, Antelope Valley did gain 330 yards, almost double its average output this season.
