Brache’s 56-Yard Field Goal Only 8 Yards Shy of Record

Five field goals in a single game is quite an achievement for a high school kicker, but it isn’t exactly what Village Christian’s Ignacio Brache had in mind.

Brache, who kicked field goals of 35, 42, 48, 55 and 56 yards in the Crusaders’ 29-14 win over Southern California Christian on Friday, is still striving for his ultimate goal--a Southern Section record for the longest field goal. Oak Park’s Eric Affholter set the record with a 64-yard kick in 1982.

“Once we crossed (the 50-yard line), I didn’t want to go any farther because he was so hot,” Village Christian Coach Mike Plaisance said. “I thought about taking two delay-of-game penalties--all of those things go through your mind--but, I didn’t want (Bert Esposito, the Southern California Christian coach) to think we were running up the score.”

Meanwhile, Brache can take solace in the fact that he broke his own Division X record by two yards. Also, his five field goals tied a Southern Section record held by four other kickers for most field goals in a single game.
