ROUNDUP : Thousand Oaks Runs Rampant

The Thousand Oaks High boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams dominated the South Valley Invitational at Huntington Beach Central Park on Saturday, illustrating why they are the state’s top-ranked teams.

Thousand Oaks scored 26 points to win the boys’ race. Chula Vista was second with 75, followed by San Diego Hoover (98), San Diego (157) and Point Loma (158).

Keith O’Dougherty of Thousand Oaks won in 15 minutes 21 seconds. Teammate Jeff Fischer was third in 15:50 and Todd Disney was fourth in 15:55.

The Lancer girls scored 29 points to easily defeat second-place Green Valley, Nevada (119). La Jolla (129) was third, followed by Cheyenne, Nevada (132), and Huntington Beach 159.

Kim Mortensen won the girls’ race, in 18:33, 40 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Teammate Bridget Roy finished third in 19:21 and Katie Scherrei was sixth in 19:44.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 5, Claremont-Mudd 0--Jill Gallegos scored three goals to lead the Regals (10-3, 7-0) in a Southern California Athletic Conference match at Cal Lutheran. Carla Crawford and Emily Kanney also scored.

Goalies Kim Carver and Laura Corsi combined for the shutout.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

Kilpatrick 13, Whittier Christian 12--Mario Qualls scored on a two-yard run as time expired, giving Kilpatrick a dramatic nonleague victory at Whittier College.

Qualls’ run capped a 14-play, 63-yard drive in which the Mustangs converted two fourth downs. Cesar Cuevas passed to Henry Flowers for 27 yards on fourth and 24 during the drive.

Kilpatrick (4-1) trailed, 12-0, entering the fourth quarter, but Qualls scored on an 11-yard run with 11:21. Qualls finished with 124 yards in 19 carries.

Cathedral 21, St. Genevieve 19--Travis Jackson scored on a one-yard run with one minute to play to prevent St. Genevieve (0-5, 0-2) from winning in a Santa Fe League game at Birmingham High.

The Valiants overcame an eight-point deficit to take a 19-15 lead early in the fourth quarter on touchdown runs of 35 yards on a reverse by Eric Tapia and one yard by Rickey Estrada. Estrada also scored on an 11-yard run.

8-MAN FOOTBALL

L.A. Lutheran 26, Ribet Academy 16--L.A. Lutheran running back Rick Lehr scored three touchdowns in a Heritage League game at L.A. Lutheran.

Lehr returned a third-quarter kickoff 73 yards for a score to give the Lions (3-2, 1-0) a 14-8 lead.

Faith Baptist 51, Santa Maria Valley Christian 6--Colby Carpenter and Tywane Patterson each scored three touchdowns for host Faith Baptist in a nonleague game.

Carpenter gained 115 yards in 11 carries and scored on runs of 40, eight and three yards. Patterson added a 12-yard touchdown run and caught two scoring passes.
