GLENDALE — Pasadena quarterback Chris McAlister carried six times for 90 yards and two touchdowns and returned a punt 68 yards for a score to lead the Bulldogs to a 42-3 rout of Hoover in the Pacific League opener Thursday night at Glendale High.
McAlister, a senior, ran 57 yards down the right sideline on a bootleg play 20 seconds into the second quarter to open the scoring. He ran the same play for a 21-yard score with 9 minutes 17 seconds left in the third quarter to put Pasadena (4-2) ahead, 21-0.
“I think our coaches had a good scheme to try and stop him,” Hoover Coach Dennis Hughes said, “But he had other ideas.
“You can’t really stop a guy like that anyways, just try to contain him. We were in the right place to do that, but he had the athleticism to get into the open field.”
Late in the first half, Pasadena linebacker Lester Town twice stopped ballcarriers for losses, forced a fumble, and blocked a 50-yard field-goal attempt by Marco Mesrobian with 1:51 left.
Hoover (2-4) avoided a shutout when Mesrobian kicked a 31-yard field goal with 7:01 to play. Emre Ozgur gained 83 yards in 19 carries for Hoover.
