SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

It was a mismatch well before the opening kickoff. And by the time the final gun sounded, Servite clearly had showed it was superior to Tustin.

Servite soundly defeated host Tustin, 41-6, in a Golden West League opener Friday night.

Four touchdowns by running back Marvin Smith and 145 yards rushing and two touchdowns by David Bedard led the way for the Friars (4-2, 1-0), who rolled to a 21-0 lead midway through the second quarter and coasted the rest of the way.

Tustin (0-6, 0-1), which lost its 12th in a row, was hurt by the absence of eight starters and two reserves, who were suspended for disciplinary reasons prior to the contest. Their status for the rest of the season is unknown.

Servite, which earned its third victory in its last four outings, finished with 357 yards in offense to only 148 for Tustin. The Friars rumbled for 319 yards on the ground as Bedard, Smith and Frank Patti, who finished with 98 yards rushing in 14 carries, had little problems finding holes behind Servite’s dominating offensive line.

“I was very pleased with our running game,” Servite Coach Larry Toner said. “I thought all three of our running backs did very, very well.”

Particularly Bedard, who opened the assault with a seven-yard touchdown run with 2:54 left in the first quarter. Smith, who had three short touchdown runs in the second half, scored his first on a five-yard run with 10:06 remaining in the first half.

Bedard added a 13-yard scoring run with 5:41 left in the quarter for a 21-0 lead.

Tustin’s lone score came on a six-yard touchdown run by sophomore tailback Brandon Lambert, who produced all but 34 yards of the Tillers’ offense with 114 yards in 16 carries.
