Cal State Bakersfield won this time around, defeating Cal State Los Angeles, 7-15, 15-8, 15-11, 15-11 in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. volleyball match Tuesday night at Cal State L.A.

But at least one rematch is inevitable for the top two teams in NCAA Division II. They will meet again next month in the regular-season finale and probably again in the West Regional. The top-ranked Roadrunners, who improved to 23-1 and 4-0 in conference, beat the Golden Eagles in four games in last year’s tournament finals.

“This game here should be the national championship, but we’ll play them two more times,” said Cal State L.A. outside hitter Korina Kemp, who had 19 kills and 17 digs. “We’ll get them. This loss isn’t going to kill us. It’s just one game.”

The defeat was the first for Cal State L.A. (18-1, 4-1) and ended a school-record winning streak for all sports. The soccer team won 16 consecutive matches in 1981, and the previous record for volleyball was 14 in 1992.

Prospects for the Golden Eagles extending their streak appeared good after they won the first game, 15-7. Cal State L.A. raced to a 5-1 lead and increased its lead to 13-4.

Cal State L.A. could not recover in the second and third games after falling behind by margins of 7-1 and 5-0. Bakersfield, the two-time defending CCAA champion, reeled off four consecutive points to break an 11-11 tie in the fourth game.

“We didn’t keep playing with the same intensity,” Kemp said. “When you’re playing teams of this caliber, you have to play perfection volleyball. Everything has to be 100%, and when you have those lapses, errors come out and you lose games. We didn’t play bad, but it’s those really small technical things that separate teams.”

Outside hitter Andrea Ferchaw led Cal State L.A. with 26 kills and 19 digs. Middle blocker Kaili Kimura had 10 kills and two service aces, and setter Adrianna Huerta added 58 assists for the Golden Eagles.

“Our game is to establish the middle, and we didn’t do that,” Kimura said. “We relied on the outside. We didn’t play exactly how we wanted to play in the first game, but we got real lucky and won. If we didn’t improve by the next game, we knew they would get us like they did.”
