Broken Ankle Sidelines Perry for Month

Tests conducted Monday revealed that offensive tackle Gerald Perry has a broken bone above his right ankle, an injury that is expected to sideline him for at least four weeks.

Perry first suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s overtime loss to the Dolphins in Miami. He returned to the field, only to re-injure it.

“I just got rolled on,” Perry said.

His loss puts further pressure on an offensive line already struggling to protect quarterback Jeff Hostetler. The Dolphins had four sacks Sunday and pressured Hostetler all afternoon.

Third-year man Greg Skrepenak will replace Perry at left tackle. Skrepenak, who sat out all of last season because of an ankle injury, has been gradually playing his way back into shape.

But his recovery program has been drastically accelerated by Perry’s loss. Asked if the Raiders were contemplating any other moves, Coach Art Shell said, “Right now, it’s going to be Skrepenak. It’s a tough thing for us, but we have to find a way to move on until Gerald gets back.”

Defensive end Scott Davis, who earlier this season was absent for two weeks because of what were described only as “personal problems,” and has been excused several other times from practice, was gone again Monday. Davis was allowed to leave the team in Miami to take care of a personal matter, but is expected back for practice on Wednesday.

Defensive tackle Chester McGlockton, who left Sunday’s game in the third quarter because of a deep shoulder bruise, “should be OK,” according to Shell. “It became kind of weak and he couldn’t use it so he couldn’t finish the game.”

Shell said he is hoping McGlockton, who also has a leg bruise and a turf toe, will be ready for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons at the Coliseum.

Receiver-kick returner Rocket Ismail left Sunday’s game because of a concussion.

“We are going to have to monitor him for a couple of days,” Shell said.

Cornerback Lionel Washington and safety Eddie Anderson are not expected to sit out. Washington has bruised ribs, Anderson a sore knee.
