Late Goals Boost Master’s in Soccer

Stephen Janho and Mark Ruhlman scored second-half goals to propel The Master’s College to a 2-0 nonconference victory over Chapman on Wednesday at Newhall.

Goalkeeper Kris Bage made six saves for Master’s (12-2-1). Craig Bennett made eight saves for Chapman (9-4-3).

Cal Lutheran 3, Whittier 1--Whittier couldn’t overcome two goals by forward Brian Collins in the match at Thousand Oaks.

Collins, who has 11 goals this season, helped Cal Lutheran (5-11, 5-3 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play) clinch at least a tie for first place in the SCIAC West Division.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 8, Whittier 0--Kim Holman, Carla Crawford and Jill Gallegos each scored two goals for the Regals in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at Whittier. Amy Walz and Shelly Burgess also scored for Cal Lutheran (14-3, 10-0).

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Crespi 27, St. Francis 7--Brennan Bakke, Mike Scarcelli and Ricky Bejune each scored six goals for the Celts (12-9, 3-2 in Mission League play).

Newbury Park 16, Thousand Oaks 14--Ryan Hodgins scored a game-high seven goals for Thousand Oaks, but Newbury Park overcame a 9-8 halftime deficit in a Marmonte League match at Thousand Oaks.

Paul Prins led Newbury Park (2-2 in league play) with five goals. Kevin Rudrud had 13 saves for Thousand Oaks (3-10, 1-2).

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Buckley d. Wise Community, 17-15, 15-7, 15-6--Rachel Espo had five kills and Stephanie Juhos had 10 assists to lead the host Griffins in a nonleague match.

Valley Alternative d. Mid-City Alternative, 15-2, 15-8, 15-12--Anjum Aslam had 15 aces to lead Valley Alternative (4-6, 4-3) in a Magnet League match.

Poly d. Grant, 15-13, 15-5, 10-15, 15-7--Latoya Seeley had 11 kills and Nicole McLurkin had five kills and four blocks for the Parrots (6-3, 4-3) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Poly.

Canoga Park d. Reseda, 15-6, 15-5, 7-15, 15-10--Glenda Pasag and Liz Vazquez each notched eight kills to propel the Hunters in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Canoga Park (8-2, 5-2). Claudia Castaneda added 10 assists.

Van Nuys d. Monroe, 15-3, 15-6, 15-13--Connie Chae led the Wolves (9-0, 4-0) with 10 kills and 31 assists in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match. Erika Alvarez added nine kills.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Loyola 27, Notre Dame 31--Ed Killmond and Jake Jensen finished first and second for Notre Dame (4-1, 4-1), but Loyola placed sixth runners among the top nine in the Mission League meet at Pierce College. Killmond timed 16 minutes 45 seconds over the four-mile course. Jensen timed 16:50.
