ROUNDUP : Hoover Runners Gang Up for Pacific Win

Crescenta Valley High senior Phil Gonzalez won his fifth race in a row Thursday, but Hoover placed five runners among the top 10 finishers to win the second Pacific League cross-country meet of the season.

Gonzalez, who was recovering from a cold, out-kicked Hoover sophomore David Lopez in the final 100 meters to time 15 minutes 16 seconds over the three-mile course at Verdugo Park in Glendale.

Lopez ran a sophomore course record of 15:18 with teammates Felipe Montoro (16:04), Wilson Aquino (16:33) and Isabel Casillas (16:35) finishing third, fourth and fifth.

David Sotomayor finished 10th in 16:56 to round out Hoover’s scoring runners as the Tornadoes totaled 24 points. Crescenta Valley, the two-time defending league champion, was second with 35, followed by Glendale (74) and Arcadia (116).

Rhaina Echols led Glendale to a 45-46 victory over Crescenta Valley in the girls’ meet. Arcadia placed third with 56, followed by Hoover with 64.

Echols timed 19:04 over the three-mile course with Hoover’s Lorien Cleavinger (19:17) and Crescenta Valley’s Michelle Zayas (19:23) finishing second and third.

COLLEGE WATER POLO

Ventura 21, Valley 6--Pedro DeLima scored six goals and fellow Brazilian Alesandre Martins added five for host Ventura in the Western State Conference match.

Goalie Luv Collins had seven saves for the Pirates (15-7-1, 3-1).

HIGH SCHOOL WATER POLO

La Canada 29, Monrovia 8--Brian Ellis had 11 goals and six assists for host La Canada in the Rio Hondo League match.

Teammates Tyler Long and Brian Collins each added four as the Spartans (11-8, 2-0) posted their fourth victory in a row.

La Canada goalie Kevin Carberry, who played the final three quarters, had 15 saves and starter Tom Patterson added eight.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Chatsworth d. El Camino Real, 15-10, 15-12, 16-14--Sophomore outside hitter Jennifer Joseph had 23 kills to lead the host Chancellors in a Northwest Valley Conference match. Jennifer Hodges added 10 kills and five blocks for Chatsworth (7-2, 6-0). Gretchen Brandenberg had 10 kills for El Camino Real (5-3, 5-1).

Kennedy d. Granada Hills, 15-8, 15-5, 15-4--Kelly Samuel had eight kills and Kristian Ongoco had seven aces to lead Kennedy (4-5, 3-3) in a Northwest Valley Conference match.

Newbury Park d. Westlake, 15-6, 15-5, 15-3--Julie Wastell had seven kills and four aces and teammate Kari Norberg added 19 assists and seven digs for host Newbury Park in the Marmonte League match.

The victory kept Newbury Park (10-2, 8-2) in a tie for second in the league with Thousand Oaks.

Thousand Oaks d. Camarillo, 15-3, 15-7, 15-6--Erin Kelly had 23 assists and 10 service aces for host Thousand Oaks in the Marmonte League match.

Kristin Scott and Jenn Detmer each had eight kills for the Lancers (9-3, 8-2), who won their fourth match in a row.

Alemany d. Harvard-Westlake, 15-12, 15-6, 3-15, 15-7--The Indians surprised the Wolverines (8-4, 5-1), who had previously lost only one game in league play. Kelly McKay had 14 kills and Jolene Small 12 and five blocks as Alemany (6-4, 4-2) recorded the upset in the “Airdome,” the school’s temporary gymnasium.

Louisville d. Notre Dame, 15-8, 15-8, 15-2--Audra Duda and Lauren Brownson each had 10 kills and four digs. Melinda Palumbo had 30 assists. The Royals are 8-4, 6-1 in the Mission League.

Notre Dame 11, St. Joseph 7--Lily Paredes and Mercedes Cornejo swept at No. 1 and 2 singles to help the Knights improve to 8-6, 6-4 in Mission League play.

Nordhoff d. Malibu, 15-6, 15-6, 15-4--Jami Sawyer had seven kills and Brandi Keeter added six for Nordhoff (9-1, 6-0) in a Frontier League match.

L.A. Lutheran d. Viewpoint, 6-15, 15-12, 15-1, 10-15, 15-8--Holly Roepke recorded 18 kills as L.A. Lutheran (9-2, 6-1) rallied to hand Viewpoint (9-2, 7-1) its first loss in Heritage League play.

Canyon d. Burroughs, 15-10, 12-15, 15-11, 15-10--Suzy Babko had 12 kills and Christy Russell 10 in a losing cause for the Indians (9-3, 4-2 in Foothill League play).

L.A. Baptist d. Western Christian, 15-2, 15-9, 15-10--Darcy Frazier recorded 10 kills as the host Knights (12-0) improved to 5-0 in Alpha League play. Tunde Hrotko added 15 assists.

Bell-Jeff d. Mary Star, 15-3, 15-5, 9-15, 15-8--Lauren Barrett had 10 kills and Letty Cabrera had nine to lead Bell-Jeff (12-2, 6-0) in a Camino Real League match.

Village Christian d. Hoover, 16-14, 11-15, 15-7, 15-11--Lolly Wilson led Village Christian (7-5) with 11 kills in a nonleague match.
