Hoover High beat Crescenta Valley at its own game Friday night, using tough defense and ball control to upset the Falcons, 34-20, in a Pacific League game at Glendale High.
Senior running back Hung Huynh scored three second-quarter touchdowns to give Hoover (3-4, 1-1 in league play) a 28-7 halftime lead. Huynh rushed for 103 yards in 21 carries in the game.
“We wanted this game really bad,” Hoover Coach Dennis Hughes said.
Crescenta Valley (5-2, 0-2) opened the scoring with two minutes left in the first quarter with a 64-yard pass play from John Watts to Jose Escalera, but Hoover answered before the end of the quarter with a 69-yard scoring play on a pass from Carlos Valadez to Eric Jenkins.
Marko Msrobian kicked a 48-yard field goal for Hoover in the third quarter and added a 31-yard kick in the fourth.
Watts was 10 of 15 for 211 yards and two touchdowns, both to Escalera.
