PREP EXTRA: SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : Fountain Valley Slams Eighth-Ranked Marina
Fountain Valley scored on four of its first five possessions and cruised to a 31-8 Sunset League victory over eighth-ranked Marina Friday at Huntington Beach High.
The Barons (4-3, 2-0 in league) thoroughly dominated the first half, taking advantage of two Marina interceptions that led to the first two touchdowns. The Barons outgained Marina, 222-49, in the first half and took a 24-0 lead. Marina is 5-2 and 0-2.
After Yamile Fernandez intercepted Matt Roberson’s first pass, Fountain Valley drove 52 yards on 11 plays, scoring on a 10-yard pass from quarterback Chris Ponchak to Michael Rumford with 3 minutes 6 seconds left in the first quarter.
On Marina’s next possession, Devin O’Day intercepted another Roberson pass, giving the Barons the ball at their own 49.
After a seven-play drive, Matt Harrison scored from one yard with 10:24 left in the half.
Ponchak completed 10 of 23 passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for another score.
On the opening possession of the second half, Marina drove 80 yards in 12 plays and scored on a 33-yard pass play from Roberson to Aron Bergman.
Trailing, 24-8, Marina drove to the Fountain Valley 12-yard line before turning it over on downs. The Vikings never came close to the end zone again.
Fountain Valley finished the scoring with a 35-yard touchdown pass from Ponchak to Joey Rozek with 3:56 left in the game.
