SOUTH LOS ANGELES : Willowbrook Park to Be Renamed for Magic Johnson

Willowbrook Park in South Los Angeles will be renamed for former Lakers basketball star Earvin (Magic) Johnson today, Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke announced.

Johnson is expected to attend the 11 a.m. ceremony at 905 E. El Segundo Blvd., which is an unincorporated area of the county.

Along with Burke, Lakers General Manager Jerry West, recording artist Howard Hewitt and Bishop Charles E. Blake of the West Los Angeles Church of God in Christ are expected to be at the ceremony.

The event will conclude with the unveiling of a plaque designating the 96-acre recreation area the Earvin (Magic) Johnson Community Regional Park. The tract has a fishing lake, family and group activity facilities, a children’s play area and restrooms.

Johnson, a member of five NBA championship teams, is an Olympic gold medalist and a onetime Lakers coach.

Three years ago he announced that he was HIV-positive and retired as a player.
