PREP ROUNDUP : Crouch Leads Marina Past Huntington Beach

Marcy Crouch had a career-high 41 kills and Marina upset fourth-ranked Huntington Beach in a Sunset League girls’ volleyball match Thursday at Marina.

The Vikings (9-7, 4-4 in league) lost the first game, 16-14, but won the next two, 15-10, 15-4, lost the fourth game, 15-4, and then finished off the Oilers (10-3, 6-2) with a 15-8 victory in the fifth game.

In another Sunset League match:

Edison 3, Fountain Valley 0--Erin McCown had 13 kills for second-ranked Edison (8-0, 14-0), which won, 15-7, 15-10, 15-5.

In the Sea View League:

Newport Harbor 3, Santa Margarita 0--Misty May had 15 kills to lead top-ranked Newport Harbor (20-0, 8-0) over host Santa Margarita, 15-2, 15-1, 15-11. Santa Margarita is 2-6 in league.

In Sea View League girls’ tennis:

Santa Margarita 10, Newport Harbor 8--Santa Margarita took advantage of the absence of Newport Harbor’s top singles player, Sarah Hawkins.

Hawkins injured her knee in Tuesday’s match against Woodbridge and looked on as the Eagles’ Jessica Pierog won two of three sets, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3.

Tracy Keyser and Tiffany Blackburn swept in doubles, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, for Santa Margarita (10-8, 4-5), which trails the third-place Sailors (9-5, 5-4) by one game.

In the Century League:

El Modena 9, Canyon 9 (El Modena wins on games, 74-70)--Brandi Freudenberg swept her singles sets, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, to lead visiting El Modena (8-2 in league). Tenth-ranked Canyon is 15-4, 6-4.

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 11, Katella 7--The No. 1 doubles team of Kiki Lundquist and Amanda Miller helped win the league title with their 6-0, 6-3, 6-3 sweep. El Dorado, ranked eighth in the county, is 16-5.

In the Golden West League:

Rosary 17, Saddleback 1--Eleanor Luzano and Michelle Hamilton each won three sets at No. 1 and No. 2 singles without losing a game as ninth-ranked Rosary (14-3, 9-0) clinched the league title.

In Sea View League boys’ cross-country:

Corona del Mar 21, El Toro 37; Santa Margarita 23, El Toro 32; Corona del Mar 26, Santa Margarita 30--Brian Slingsby broke the O’Neill Park three-mile course record with a first-place time of 15:53 for ninth-ranked Corona del Mar (4-1).

In the Sunset League:

Huntington Beach 20, Marina 36--Huntington Beach’s Tony Trueba ran a school-record 14:50 over three miles at Marina. Trueba’s time was also a Sunset League sophomore record and the fastest time in the league this year.
