LOS ANGELES : Judge Refuses to Revoke Bail for Rapper’s Bodyguard
A judge refused Friday to revoke bail for rapper Snoop Doggy Dogg’s bodyguard, despite allegations by the prosecution that the murder defendant has committed other crimes and purchased a gun since the slaying. Superior Court Judge Paul G. Flynn ordered McKinley Lee, 24, confined to his home with an electronic device monitoring his whereabouts pending trial Jan. 13.
Snoop Doggy Dogg, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, Lee, and acquaintance Sean Abrams, 24, were indicted for the Aug. 25, 1993, shooting of Philip Woldemariam. All three pleaded not guilty in the drive-by shooting that the rapper’s lawyer says was self-defense. Prosecutors contend it was gang-related.
The three men were released on bail. The prosecution asked Flynn to jail Lee pending the trial because the defendant allegedly lied on a federal firearms application form and purchased a gun after he was indicted. The prosecutor added that Lee was arrested earlier this year on misdemeanor marijuana possession and felony transportation of steroids charges.
