Buena Park survived a 213-yard rushing performance by Troy’s Larry Montgomery and upset the Warriors, 17-14, Friday at Buena Park.

The Coyotes (3-6, 2-2) moved into a tie for second place with Troy (6-3, 2-2), Sunny Hills and Fullerton in the Freeway League.

Corey Lyday opened the game with a 91-yard kickoff return to the Buena Park four and a penalty moved the ball to the two, but it took seven minutes and another possession before Buena Park scored. The Troy defense stopped four rushing attempts by quarterback David Barrios and took over on the one.

The Warriors eventually punted to the 37 and Buena Park scored with five minutes left in the first quarter on a three-yard run by Tim Jones.

Troy countered with a 30-yard touchdown run by Montgomery with 3:03 left in the quarter. Darrell Cahoon blocked the conversion attempt.

Buena Park increased its lead to 14-6 when Barrios hit a wide-open Michael Cade, who outraced the Troy defense for a 67-yard scoring pass.

Jude Reyes made a 36-yard field goal with three minutes left in the half for Buena Park.

Reyes made a 23-yard field goal early in the third quarter, but the Coyotes accepted a roughing-the-kicker penalty and then fumbled the ball away on the next play.

Troy put together a 91-yard drive with Montgomery scoring from the two and adding a two-point conversion with 3:33 left in the third quarter, reducing the lead to 17-14.
