SOUTHERN SECTION FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Quartz Hill Goes for It, Falls Short

Share

With three seconds to play Coach John Albee said he never considered kicking a field goal that would have given Quartz Hill High a tie and retained second place in the Golden League.

Instead, he called a pass play that failed when quarterback Damien Kendrid tripped over his own blocker as time expired, and the Rebels fell to Ridgecrest Burroughs, 23-20, Friday night at Quartz Hill.

The loss dropped the Rebels (5-2-2, 2-1-1 in league play) into third place and eliminated them from title contention.

Kendrid drove the Rebels 63 yards in seven plays, aided by a pass-interference penalty that gave Quartz Hill a first-and-goal at the Burroughs nine-yard line with three seconds to play.

Demario Brown finished with 195 yards in 32 carries and scored on a pair of four-yard runs for Burroughs (6-3, 3-1).

With the Rebels trailing, 16-13, late in the third quarter, Kendrid put together a 12-play, 76-yard drive, capped off by a 14-yard touchdown pass to James Welch that gave Quartz Hill a 20-16 lead with four minutes to play.
