PREP ROUNDUP : Newport Harbor Loses Volleyball Match

Newport Harbor, the No. 1 ranked girls’ volleyball team in the State, lost its first match of the season, falling to San Jose Archbishop Mitty, 15-4, 16-14, 11-15, 15-6, in the quarterfinals of the Santa Barbara tournament Friday at Santa Barbara High.

The Sailors (19-1), played the quarterfinal match without setter Jenny Hecker, who played in the first-round victory over San Jose Leland Friday morning, but returned to Newport Harbor because she was a member of the homecoming court.

Misty May, who normally plays outside hitter, filled in at setter, but the Sailors were out of sync.

Laguna Beach and Corona del Mar also won their first-round matches and lost in the quarterfinals. All three schools will play for fifth place when the tournament concludes today.

In the Golden West League girls’ tennis finals:

Rosary sweeps--Rosary’s Eleanor Luzano defeated Judy Esmero of Westminster, 6-2, 7-5, to win the singles title. Luzano is 50-2 this season, including 28-0 in league play. Rosary’s Cheryl Hamilton and Colleen Coady, who are 22-0 this season, won the doubles title.

In the South Coast League:

Dana Hills dominates--Top-seeded Lara Spica defeated teammate Margaux Pierog, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 to win the singles title. In an all-Dana Hills doubles final, the Michele Johnson and Katie Tierney defeated Lauren Kirby and Karlie Noyes, 6-3, 6-3.

In the Freeway League:

Ruldolph wins singles title again--Sunny Hills’ Dana Ruldolph won the league singles title for the second consecutive year, defeating teammate Barbie Bayless, 6-0, 6-4. Ruldolph also beat Bayless in last year’s final. Troy’s Nao Kondo and Dana Kim won the doubles title.

In the Olympic League:

Wright wins singles title--Orange Lutheran’s Lori Wright defeated Calvary Chapel’s Julianne Eastman, 6-1, 6-4, to win the singles title. In an all-Connelly doubles final, Cari Winkler and Mera Kriz beat Mimi Nguyen and Rani Singh, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3.

In the Sunset League:

Rosenthal wins title--Los Alamitos’ Melissa Rosenthal defeated Huntington Beach’s Allison Arvizu, 6-4, 6-1, to win the singles title.

In a Freeway League girls’ volleyball playoff:

Troy 3, Fullerton 0--Jenny Gadd had 14 kills as host Troy (9-7) earned a Southern Section playoff berth with a 15-8, 15-13, 15-13 sweep.

In a Pacific Coast League girls’ volleyball playoff:

University 3, Estancia 2--Courtney Chase had 23 kills and Andrea Iliescu added 20 for University, which defeated Estancia, 11-15, 15-4, 7-15, 15-4, 15-13, in a playoff for third place.

In the Academy League:

St. Margaret’s 3, Capistrano Valley Christian 2--Emily Hallenbeck had 19 kills to lead St. Margaret’s (9-5, 3-3) over Capistrano Valley Christian 15-13, 2-15, 12-15, 15-10, 15-13. St. Margaret’s won the league title because of two victories over Capistrano Valley Christian (9-5, 3-3).

In Orange League water polo:

Brea-Olinda 15, Valencia 2--Tad Murphy’s scored seven goals to set a school single-season scoring record for Brea-Olinda (22-4, 8-0). Murphy has 108 goals, breaking Ray Schwengel’s record of 106 in 1988. The victory also gave the Wildcats a record for games won in a season, breaking the 1990 mark of 21.

In nonleague water polo:

Esperanza 11, Servite 9--Mike Stanley scored five goals, John Zin added three and Peter Lange recorded 17 saves to lead host Esperanza, ranked fifth in the county.
