Melissa Schutz, a middle blocker from Newport Harbor, has orally committed to play volleyball at Colorado.

Schutz, a first-team All-Orange County selection last season, helped the Sailors win the Sea View League this season and earn the No. 1 seeding for the Division I playoffs. Schutz, who is also a standout on the Newport Harbor basketball and swim teams, also considered Duke, Notre Dame and UCLA.

Calvary Chapel’s Courtney Owens, who plays with Schutz on the Orange County club volleyball team, has also committed to Colorado.

Foothill shortstop Michelle Churnock said Monday she has orally committed to play softball for Arizona next year.

Churnock, a two-time Times all-county player who batted .548 with 22 runs and 31 stolen bases during the regular season, plans to sign a letter of intent Thursday.

“It fit what I wanted, there’s no doubt it’s a great program and I liked everything about it,” she said. “I liked the players, the school and the people around the area. It felt comfortable to me.”

El Dorado shortstop Nikki Hart has orally committed to play softball for Oregon State, said Chris Schaner, her coach.

Hart, a second-team Times all-county selection, batted .355 with nine triples in a leadoff role for the Golden Hawks.
