Jim Benkert has been soaked in ice water twice already this season, and if things continue to go well for the Westlake High football coach, it’ll happen one more time.

Benkert was drenched after the Warriors beat Agoura, 28-6, on Thursday night at Thousand Oaks High. The game finished off Westlake’s perfect Marmonte League season and the Warriors’ first league title since 1982.

Benkert, who was also doused after a victory over Thousand Oaks, will take the Warriors, who are ranked second in Division III of the Southern Section, into the playoffs next Friday.

“We’ve got four more games to go and we’re going to play each like it’s our last and hopefully win (the Southern Section title),” said Westlake’s Billy Miller.

Miller’s confidence level is up because the Warriors have been playing well lately in nearly all aspects of the game.

Westlake (9-1, 7-0 in the league) rolled up 301 yards of offense.

Quarterback Scott Spruill completed 12 of 19 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown. Miller caught four passes for 39 yards and Mike Leibin caught six passes for 72 yards.

Jamal Harris rushed for 88 yards in 10 carries and scored a touchdown.

Westlake’s defense nearly posted a shutout, allowing only a fourth-quarter touchdown.

Defensive back Steve Aylsworth helped keep Agoura off the scoreboard for most of the game, intercepting three passes, all deep in Westlake territory.

Aylsworth has seven interceptions this season, including three against Royal.

Agoura (5-5, 4-3) struggled early, but its offense picked up as the game went on. Quarterback Eric Fitzgerald completed 14 of 28 passes for 150 yards.

Agoura running back Tommy Kim, who gained 250 yards last week, managed only 36 in 11 carries.

The Chargers, who got off to a 3-1 start in league play, must hope for an at-large bid to playoffs. They needed a victory, and help, to get in automatically, and chances for the former seemed to evaporate in the first quarter Thursday.

Westlake’s Jason Victor returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown.

After Agoura ran three plays and punted, Westlake drove 54 yards on its next possession for another score, a 20-yard pass to Miller, giving Westlake a 14-0 lead not five minutes into the game.

Westlake added another first-half touchdown on a 15-yard run by Harris.

The Warriors took a 28-0 lead in the fourth quarter when backup quarterback Brian Shubin threw a five-yard scoring pass to Victor.
