Bishop Amat Dominates to Perfection

Share

It was the same old story for the La Puente Bishop Amat High football team. Daylon McCutcheon runs, the defense dominates and the Lancers mow down another opponent.

Sante Fe Springs St. Paul became the Lancers’ 10th victim Friday night, falling, 21-6, before an estimated crowd of 8,000 at Bishop Amat.

McCutcheon turned in another stellar effort, rushing for 177 yards and three touchdowns in 30 carries, as the Lancers, ranked No. 1 by The Times, finished the regular season at 10-0 and 5-0 in Del Rey League play. Ninth-ranked St. Paul finished 7-3 and 2-3, and still clings to hopes of reaching the Southern Section Division I playoffs, which begin Friday.

Bishop Amat will play next week as the division’s top-seeded team.

The Lancers’ defense appears mightier than ever after allowing St. Paul only 107 yards on offense, including a scoring drive late in the fourth quarter that covered 80 yards.

Before that, the Swordsmen had managed only two first downs.

“Our defense did a super job tonight,” said Bishop Amat Coach Tom Salter. “We played well, but we will have to play even better next week. Everything starts over again in the playoffs.”
