COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine Beats 49ers in Water Polo Opener

Omar Amr and Matt Maunz each scored four goals as UC Irvine beat Long Beach State, 16-10, in the opening round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo tournament Friday at Long Beach.

It was the fourth consecutive victory for UC Irvine (9-11), the ninth-ranked team in the nation.

The Anteaters play California at 11 today at Long Beach Belmont Plaza.

In the Rolex ITA Southern California Regionals:

Top players advance--Top-seeded Keri Phebus (UCLA) and No. 2 Jane Chi (UCLA) advanced to the quarterfinals in play at UC Irvine.

Phebus, from Corona del Mar High, also teamed with Susie Starrett to beat Arizona State’s Stephanie Landsdorp and Reka Cseresnyes, 6-2, 6-1, to advance in doubles.

In nonconference men’s swimming and diving:

UC Irvine 63, New Mexico State 46; Northern Arizona 68, UC Irvine 41--Pat Keenan won the 200 butterfly (2:00.12) and 200 freestyle (1:46.65) and Jeff Hoskinson won the 200 backstroke (2:02.85) and 200 individual medley (2:03.50) for UC Irvine.

In nonconference women’s swimming and diving:

Northern Arizona 147, UC Irvine 87--Gwen Yoshizumi, Amerie Nordberg, Carrie Rowe and Shelly Wright set a pool record, winning the 400-medley relay in 4:03.14 for UC Irvine.

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

Long Beach State 3, San Jose State 1--Nichelle Burton had 17 kills and Traci Dahl added 13 kills to lead visiting Long Beach State, 8-15, 15-5, 15-3, 15-6.

Utah State 3, Cal State Fullerton 2--Lisi Fa’agata had 18 kills and Jennifer Lipski added 13 for Cal State Fullerton, which lost, 9-15, 15-8, 14-16, 15-12, 15-9.
