Valley Gets Up, Downs Compton

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

With his team’s dream of an undefeated season having ended in a loss to Bakersfield College last week, Valley Coach Jim Fenwick was concerned about how his team would respond Saturday against Compton.

As it turned out, there was little cause for alarm.

The Monarchs (8-1, 8-1 in the Western State Conference) kept alive their hopes of a bowl bid by routing the Tartars, 43-6.

“I’ve been in coaching long enough to know that we might have been in for a letdown today,” Fenwick said.

“But we cautioned them about it before the game and look how they responded.”

Jim Arellanes threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Brian Comer on Valley’s first possession and Compton (3-5-1, 2-5-1) didn’t look back.

Arellanes, leading passer in the WSC, completed 21 of 32 for 361 yards and two touchdowns and figures to become the school’s single-season leader in passing yardage against Santa Monica next Saturday. He has 3,082 yards this season, 52 fewer than the record set by Sean Fitzgerald last year.

Davis Delmatoff gained 57 yards, scored a touchdown and caught two passes for 20 yards in his first start at running back. Comer, leading receiver in the WSC, caught seven passes for 102 yards.
