Master’s Knocked Out in NAIA First Round : Women’s volleyball: Southern California sweeps past the Mustangs, 15-9, 15-12, 15-10.

Celeste Wright and Genevieve Young each had nine kills as Southern California College swept The Master’s, 15-9, 15-12, 15-10, in a first-round volleyball match of the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics Far West Regional.

“I was scared to death,” said Vanguard Coach Eric Boyles, whose team defeated The Master’s twice earlier in the season. “It’s usually a rule that you can’t beat a team three times.”

Sophomore Wendy Jones had 15 kills and Rose Dignadize added 22 assists for the fourth-seeded Mustangs (27-13).

Karajean Stephenson had four kills and 20 assists for fifth-seeded Southern California (18-10).

Master’s was tentative early, committing eight service errors and four rotation errors in the first game.

“You play with more confidence when you are ahead,” Master’s Coach Dean Conk said. “But we were behind the whole time. We were playing not to lose and they were playing to win.”

With the second game tied, 12-12, Vanguard Janine Katter served out the game. Southern California didn’t trail again.
