OUTLOOK

Mallett is hoping to return this program to its glory days. The Saxons have struggled the past couple years, including two-victory seasons each of the last two years. She inherits only three seniors and five returners from last year’s fifth-place team, which won only one league game. The lack of depth means freshmen Colon and Holman will play a lot. Colon is one of the best freshmen in the league, and is expected to start from the outset. The Saxons will also struggle with rebounding and scoring in the post. Overall team quickness and a fast-break style offense should help the Saxons win more than a handful of games. Mallett says the team philosophy consists of outlasting opponents by being in better condition and compares the team strategy to Arkansas’ “Thirty minutes of hell.” Flores will move to point guard and, along with Hsu, will run the show. Joosten and Jackson will provide a majority of the scoring in the paint. Experience is definitely a strong point, with three seniors and two juniors returning. Mallett says the team’s goal is to finish with a .500 record. A tough summer regimen and a less-than demanding nonleague schedule make that possible.
