OUTLOOK

There are no delusions of grandeur here. While most coaches hope for a shot at a league title or a playoff berth, Reed has set simple goals: Keep all games close and win five of them. Reed said his biggest task will be finding a replacement for graduated point guard Carrie Arakaki. “She handled the ball, ran the offense and basically did everything,” he said. “Our biggest problem is finding someone who can handle the ball to get the offense started. That was a big problem this summer, but I think we’ll have it ironed out by league play.” He said he hopes Placilla can fill that role. With no returning starters and very inexperienced returners, Reed said he is ready for a long season. “I feel if we win two games, we’re doing good. We don’t have a lot of basketball talent; we have girls who come out and play the game as hard as they can.” He said the team’s strength will be defense. And though the outlook appears bleak, Reed says he is still looking forward to the season “because there could be some surprises,” he said. “We might win more than five, six, seven games. But our skill level is not what other schools are.”
