ROUNDUP : La Reina Girls Advance to Tennis Title Match

The La Reina High girls’ tennis team, led by doubles players Vicki Hull and Katie Nelson, and Catherine Chien and Heather Szabo, defeated South Hills, 12-6, in a semifinal match of the Southern Section Division V playoffs at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village on Thursday.

Hull and Nelson, the Regents’ No. 1 doubles team, and No. 2 Chien and Szabo each swept their doubles matches against South Hills.

The win was the fifth in a row and 14th in the last 15 matches for La Reina (15-3), which will play Nordhoff in the championship match at The Claremont Club on Tuesday.

It will be La Reina’s second appearance in a section final. The Regents lost to Mayfield, 13-5, in the 1-A Division final in 1986.

In other girls’ tennis playoff matches:

Nordhoff 10, Rim of the World 8--Sarah Blaine and Cara Dunstan, Nordhoff’s No. 3 doubles team, defeated No. 1 Amanda Scopen and Andrea Prince of Rim of the World, 6-2, to clinch the Rangers’ victory in the final match of the Southern Section Division V semifinal at Ojai Valley Racquet Center.

The win was the sixth in a row for Nordhoff (14-6) and propelled the Rangers into the section final for the first time since 1978, when they lost to Westlake, 11-7, at the 1-A Division level.

Laguna Beach 16, Calabasas 2--The Coyotes’ upset streak ended with a semifinal loss to the top-seeded team in the Southern Section Division II playoffs. The match was started at Alta Laguna Park in Laguna Beach, then moved to Laguna Beach High because the courts there have lights.

MEN’S SOCCER

Geneva (Pa.) College 0, The Master’s College 0 (Geneva wins, 4-1, in shoot-out)--Geneva connected on all four of its kicks in the overtime shoot-out to win the semifinal of the National Christian College Athletic Assn. championships at Lee College in Cleveland, Tenn.

Bryan Lee was the only Master’s player who scored in the shoot-out as Patrick Smith hit the left post on the Mustangs’ first attempt and Ryan Howard’s shot was blocked on the team’s third.

Master’s (16-4-3) will play Bartlesville (Okla.) Wesleyan in a third-place match Saturday.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

L.A. Baptist d. Mayfield, 15-12, 15-12, 15-8--The second-seeded Knights earned a trip to the Division V final for the third time in four seasons with the victory at Village Christian. L.A. Baptist won the section championship in 1991, lost in the final in ’92 and reached the quarterfinals in ’93.

Santa Ynez d. Nordhoff, 10-15, 15-13, 15-8, 6-15, 15-7--Jami Sawyer had 24 kills and Brandi Keeter had 11 kills, but the second-seeded Rangers (17-2) lost a Division IV semifinal at Villanova Prep in Ojai.
