ROUNDUP : Northridge Volleyball Win Streak Hits 4

Missy Clements had 18 kills and Heather Anderson added 11 kills and 14 digs as visiting Cal State Northridge defeated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 15-5, 16-14, 15-7, in a nonconference women’s volleyball match Friday night.

The victory was the fourth in a row for Northridge (16-8) and the sixth in seven matches. The Matadors have swept their opponents in each victory during that stretch.

Clements, a 5-foot-11 outside hitter who had become Northridge’s career kill leader in the previous match, had a .469 hitting percentage for the Matadors, who hit .278 as a team.

Middle blocker Ana Kristich had five kills and a match-high seven blocks for Northridge, which plays at Cal State Sacramento in a regular-season finale tonight.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Cal Lutheran 83, UC Santa Cruz 52--Derrick Clark had 18 points and seven rebounds as Cal Lutheran opened the season with a runaway victory in the first round of the Menlo College tournament.

Clark, who was All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference last season, made seven of 14 shots and all four of his free throws.

Jon Rider had 11 points, and Dave Ulloa and Christian Dunbar each had 10 for the Kingsmen, who will play the winner of Friday’s late Occidental-Menlo game for the championship tonight.

Glendale 61, Rio Hondo 56--The Vaqueros shot 60% in the first half and built a 21-point lead, but made just six of 24 shots in the second half and held on for a nonconference victory at home.

Maurice McIntosh led Glendale (3-0) with 16 points, Charlie Garcia had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Maurice Sowells added 11 points and five assists.

Victor Valley 95, Valley 84--Victor Valley broke open a close game by converting free throws down the stretch to hand Valley its first loss in a nonconference game at Victor Valley.

Kenyth Henry had 23 points and eight rebounds and guard Craig Griffin had 15 points for Valley (3-1), which trailed, 40-38, at halftime.

Point guard Vernard Harris had eight assists for the Monarchs. Victor Valley is 2-1.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Pt. Loma Nazarene 77, The Master’s 49--Jodi Agueda had 16 points and nine rebounds for Master’s in the nonconference game at Pt. Loma Nazarene, but the Mustangs (1-1) could not recover from 40-14 halftime deficit.

Connie Van Wingerden added 10 points and four steals for Master’s.

College of the Canyons 87, Compton 71--Rebekah Cunnan had 31 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Cougars in the first round of the Mt. San Jacinto Tournament.

Kyetra Brown had 12 rebounds and 12 assists to go along with nine points for Canyons (2-0), which built a 35-22 halftime lead.
