Only Palisades Stands in Way of Chatsworth : Girls’ volleyball: Chancellors face daunting challenge in City 4-A final against perennial power.

The Chatsworth High girls’ volleyball team should be able to handle the pressure of playing for the City Section 4-A championship tonight against Palisades.

The players say they have already played under championship-type intensity.

Last week, the Chancellors (11-4) defeated Van Nuys, 16-14, 15-10, 15-12, in the second round of the playoffs. Van Nuys was undefeated entering the match, including a five-game victory over Chatsworth in the preseason.

“That didn’t feel like a second-round match, it felt like a championship match,” outside hitter Jennifer Joseph said.

Chatsworth, seeded second, will face tougher conditions against the top-seeded Dolphins in the 8 p.m. match at Occidental College.

Palisades (14-1) is used to championship matches, having won the City title the last four seasons and 18 times in 20 years. The Dolphins’ only loss was to Southern Section power Marlborough.

But Chatsworth will again have revenge as a motivating factor. Palisades defeated Chatsworth in four games in a preseason match.

Chatsworth middle blocker Jennifer Hodges has been outstanding in the playoffs. She had 12 kills and 13 blocks against Van Nuys and had 10 kills and 10 blocks in a semifinal sweep over San Pedro.
