Unbeaten Glendale Unhappy With 3-1 Victory : Men’s soccer: Vaqueros survive some scary moments against San Bernardino.

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Most teams are pretty happy when they win a match and advance in postseason play.

With the Glendale College men’s soccer team, it was hard to tell.

“I wasn’t happy with our performance,” Vaquero Coach Joe Agoston said after a 3-1 victory over visiting San Bernardino Valley on Tuesday in the first round of the Southern California Regional at John Ferraro Field.

Defender Vladislav Kosynsk went ever further.

“It feels good to win,” he said. “But we played poorly. We dominated the entire game and couldn’t capitalize on a very weak defense.”

The Vaqueros have come to expect a lot from themselves after allowing only one goal while steam-rolling through the Western State Conference.

Glendale (15-0-5) will meet Rancho Santiago on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a second-round match-up at Rancho Santiago. The winner will advance to the state championships at Cosumnes River College Dec. 3-4.

The Vaqueros last qualified for the semifinals in 1986, Agoston’s first season as coach.

San Bernardino is a team that has left many opponents scratching their heads this season.

The Indians (12-5-3) didn’t even have a team in 1992 and ’93 because of budgetary problems.

In their first season back--and with a new coach and a team of new players--they finished second in the South Coast Conference behind top-rated East Los Angeles and moved on to the regional for the first time in school history.

“They have accomplished a lot for a first-year program,” Agoston said.

It seemed as if the Indians might continue to cut their teeth by taking a chunk of the Vaqueros.

San Bernardino’s Francisco Arevalo headed a free kick from Alberto Valenzuela past goalkeeper Erick Alvarado to tie it, 1-1, in the 50th minute.

A few minutes later, Vladimir Duran almost put the Indians ahead, but his shot bounced off the right post.

However, Kosynsk scored on a direct free kick from close range in the 72nd minute after San Bernardino’s George Ambrossi was called for a foul.

“We were very fortunate to get a free kick that close,” Kosynsk said of the tie-breaking goal.

Ten minutes later, Vrezh Shakhbandaryan beat Indian goalkeeper Victor Hipolito from 10 yards.

Sergio Barranco scored in the 26th minute for Glendale, when he lofted a high shot over Hipolito.

Soon after that goal, Hipolito pounced on a ball in the muddy goal mouth, but Barranco kicked it out of his hands and into the net.

The goal was disallowed and Barranco was called for a foul.

Late in the second half, Barranco had another apparent goal nullified, this time by an offside call.
